The Seaport Museum reopened December 14th after post-hurricane recovery
|
Less than two months since Hurricane Sandy devastated Lower Manhattan, the South Street Seaport Museum reopened on December 14th. While the museums ground-level gift shop, caf, and heating and electrical systems were swamped by floodwaters, upper-level exhibits remained safe, and are back on view. A new exhibit, A Fishermans Dream: Folk Art, also debuts with the reopening.
The museum is located in the landmarked Schermerhorn Row (at 12 Fulton Street), where most neighboring businesses remained closed and even boarded up while area cleanup continues.
Because of mechanical system damage, the Seaport Museum is temporarily only accessible by stairs. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with $10 admission for adults and $6 for students and seniors (free for children under 9 years of age); admission includes entry to the historic lightship the Ambrose.
The museum is requesting additional donations to aid in its recovery and restoration of its historic buildings. To donate, click here.
