WTC projects will strive for or exceed the U.S. Green Building Standards

Rebuilding the World Trade Center (WTC) using sustainable materials, renewable resources, and energy-saving equipment is a top priority, according to Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) officials.
Speaking to Community Board 1’s WTC Redevelopment Committee on November 10th, Sayer Lonial, LMDC director of planning and development, shared with downtown stakeholders some of the site’s Sustainable Design Guidelines. As noted on the agency’s “Implementation Matrix,” each of the WTC projects will strive for or exceed the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED standards, with the towers each being built to earn at least “Silver” certification.
Developer Silverstein Properties, the Port Authority, and the state Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) are collaborating ensure the rebuilt WTC is a “green” complex. The towers, WTC Transportation Hub, Memorial, and vehicular security center will include sustainable features including water-efficient landscaping, local and recycled materials, trees and other plantings to help reduce temperatures, and access to mass transit and bicycle facilities.
