Three Subway Stations Getting New Escalators

The MTA's escalator project began in August 2012
The MTA's escalator project began in August 2012

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently launched projects to replace the aging escalators at three downtown stations. Work began in August at the Whitehall R train station, East Broadway F station, and at the Bowery J/Z station. Construction access at Whitehall is at the intersection of Stone Street, at the Bowery station at the Delancey intersection, and at the East Broadway station at the Rutgers intersection. Stairways are open at each station. The three projects are estimated to cost $14.5 million total, and benefit nearly 15,000 daily riders.

Oliveira Contracting is performing the rehabilitation work and expects to complete all three escalator jobs in spring 2013.

Riders can check service on the MTA's elevators and escalators here.
