Chambers Street water-main work begins appx. August 9th
|
A major utility project is set to begin the second week of August on Chambers Street. The work is part of the city's plan to improve and update downtown infrastructure, which has already installed new water mains and other vital utilities on Fulton, Liberty, Beekman, and other downtown streets.
On Chambers Street, crews from contractor Judlau Construction will begin with mass excavation on the south side between West Street and West Broadway. To accommodate the extensive work, Chambers Street will be reduced to one-way westbound traffic between West and W. Broadway. That traffic change will reroute eastbound M22 buses to Warren Street; the westbound M22 bus stops will be shifted outside of the work zone. Regular traffic will be redirected to either Murray or Canal Street.
The project has been in the works for several years, with city engineers coordinating the replacement of existing water mains that are at least 100 years old. The new, higher-capacity water mains will tie into an updated infrastructure network that will help minimize emergencies due to aging mains, ducts, and pipes.
Other outdated utilities will also be replaced, including electric, gas, steam, sewer, and telecommunications, and the roadway will be rebuilt with new curbs, sidewalks, and pavement. New traffic signals and signs also will be installed, and more trees planted.
As part of its community outreach, the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) has set up a field office at 22 Park Place, 3rd floor. The projectchambersstccl@gmail.com. Project brochures, signs, public meetings, and temporary water shutdown announcements will remain key to local notification.
Local businesses affected by the Chambers Street capital reconstruction may qualify for small business grants through the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. The Small Firm Assistance Program (Read more about the program here.)
Together with the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center and Community Board 1, the DDC also will host periodic community stakeholder meetings.
