West Street lane reductions are planned near the WTC site
|
To facilitate ongoing construction, the state Department of Transportation plans to temporarily reduce West Street (Route 9A) traffic lanes for one week, starting Saturday, July 7th at 1 a.m. Between Vesey and West Thames Streets, two lanes of both northbound and southbound West Street will be closed overnight on both Saturday and Sunday, from approximately 1 a.m. to late morning. Then starting Sunday night, July 8th through Friday, July 13th, single-lane closures will be in place overnight, and midday during non-peak traffic hours (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
Lanes also will be reduced on West Street between Vesey and Chambers Street on the same days, though the hours of the double-lane closures will be reduced to 10 p.m. to midnight each weekend day, and approximately 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights.
The double-lane closures allow SDOT crews to set up a new, temporary traffic pattern in the World Trade Center vicinity. Upon completion, the West Street traffic lanes (three lanes each direction) will shift east, allowing the Port Authority to continue its construction of the east-west connector pedestrian tunnel under West Street.
In addition, SDOT crews continue to close one lane of both north- and southbound Battery Park Underpass on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for renovation work.
SDOT crews also remain at work rebuilding the state highway as part of the West Street Promenade Segment 2 project.
Motorists are advised to take alternate routes during the lane-closure hours. Signs and traffic agents will be posted to help maintain traffic. Questions about the project can be addressed to the projects Community Outreach Liaison Julie Nadel at 1-800-714-0454 or route9a@dot.state.ny.us.
