As the jury process to select a winning design for the permanent memorial at Ground Zero gets underway, a fund to support its eventual construction has already been created. The newly-established World Trade Center Memorial Foundation received $130,000 in entrance fees paid by memorial competition participants, and additional donations are now being accepted.
Even without official announcement of the fund's creation, more than $600,000 has been pledged over the past several weeks by individuals and groups eager to help pay for the memorial. These funds, combined with the memorial submission fees, will form the cornerstone of the foundation, which, with the addition of subsequent donations, is expected to help finance the memorial's construction and future upkeep.
