Three Questions for Rich Dalessio, Fiterman Hall

From 2002 to mid-2009, Fiterman Hall stood just north of the World Trade Center, wrapped safely in scaffolding and netting. Now the 15-story building has virtually disappeared after just four and a half months of demolition.

The 1959 former office building was made a City University of New York (CUNY) extension in 1993, when it was donated by philanthropists Miles and Shirley Fiterman and converted to classrooms. In 2000 it underwent a $62 million renovation that was drawing thousands of students daily -- before it was badly damaged and rendered unusable from falling debris on September 11, 2001.

Cortlandt St Northbound Subway Platform Reopens

On Wednesday, November 25th -- more than a month ahead of schedule -- the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will reopen the northbound platform of the Cortlandt Street R/W subway station at 3 p.m. The station was closed in summer 2005 while crews excavated for and built the structure of the Dey Street pedestrian concourse, which will link the Fulton Transit Center to the World Trade Center (WTC). That work was completed earlier this year, allowing crews to restore the northbound platform.

This weekend, Tishman Construction will remove the remaining tower crane sections at 123 Washington Street, soon to open as a W Hotel. The removal requires a temporary full closure of both Washington and Carlisle Streets beside the work site on Saturday and Sunday, November 21st and 22nd. Façade work will continue on the tower using the building’s hoist for the next several weeks. The new hotel is slated to open in March 2010.

BPC Site 23 Crane Removal to Close Warren Street

The crane is coming down at Battery Park City (BPC) Site 23, requiring a full closure of Warren Street on Saturday, November 21st, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The closure allows Plaza Construction crews to dismantle the crane using Warren Street in BPC, as well as the northbound lane of North End Avenue between Murray and Chambers Street. The roadways will be restored overnight on Saturday. The tower crane was used to erect the 22-story residential building, which is slated to open in January 2011.

WTC Memorial Plaza on Schedule for 2011 Opening

Already the north tower footprint is clear -- a square concrete hollow that will eventually hold a reflecting pool surrounded by the largest man-made waterfall in the world. Nearby, the south tower footprint is halfway done, and below grade, oversized artifacts are being moved into their future homes.

That was the report from Joe Daniels, president and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center site. Daniels presented the latest news to Community Board 1 on November 9th, saying that by early 2010 all steel will be installed for the Memorial -- on schedule for a permanent, public opening of the plaza in September 2011.
