Washington Street Pedestrian Plaza Opens in May

On May 22nd and 23rd, the New York City Department of Transportation will begin installing a new pedestrian plaza on Washington Street, between Albany and Carlisle Streets. The block-long plaza will close the roadway, replacing it with a painted gravel sidewalk, granite blocks, and decorative planters, as well as movable tables and chairs. The plaza is being created with the help of the Downtown Alliance, which will also install an information kiosk at the site.

The new public space will add seating, alleviate crowding on sidewalks, and safely improve pedestrian flow especially for National 9/11 Memorial visitors to the WTC site. It is similar to other car-free plazas created around Lower Manhattan in recent years, as well as the new one coming to Water Street this summer.

City Releases Preparedness Report in Wake of Sandy

This month, the Mayor’s Office released the city’s “After-Action” report for Hurricane Sandy, a comprehensive review local preparedness measures and recovery operations before, during, and after the storm.

To date, the city has helped more than 20,000 families return to their homes through the Rapid Repairs program, distributed more than three million meals to those who needed them and cleared an estimated 700,000 tons of debris. As it works to launch new programs to address housing, business, and infrastructure needs in the hardest hit communities with $1.77 billion in federal aid, the city’s efforts now also focus on the long-term challenges, including developing a roadmap to make New York City more resilient to future storms.

The After-Action report was developed through more than 100 inter- and intra-agency meetings. Many of the recommendations in the report are applicable beyond coastal storms and will increase the city’s overall capacity to respond to future emergencies.

Final 1 WTC Spire Pieces Ascend to Roof

The last of 18 sections of 1 World Trade Center’s steel spire today were lifted more than 140 stories high, onto the tower’s roof. The two final pieces will be affixed this week, completing the 408-foot-tall antenna and bring the building’s total height to 1,776 feet. Port Authority crews have installed the massive steel components one at a time since December 2012, along with the rooftop parapet that will form a ring around the base of the spire. The final sections were lifted by crane two days later than originally scheduled due to Monday’s bad weather conditions.

With the spire in place, crews will continue the final upper-facade glass installation. The glass curtain wall on the tower’s lower 20 floors (called the “podium”) also is being installed through the spring. Building fit-out will continue until 1 WTC opens in early 2014.

The city Department of Design and Construction’s infrastructure reconstruction on Beekman Street is complete between South and Front Streets, and on April 8th crews began final curb, sidewalk, and cobblestone-roadway restorations. Parking is suspended on that block during the project, with traffic limited to one westbound lane. The work is part of the Peck Slip Reconstruction project, which replaced the water main and other utilities beneath Beekman Street.

Crews continue other utility and restoration work on Peck Slip from South to Pearl Streets; on Water Street from Peck to Dover; and Front Street from Peck to Dover. The entire project is currently expected to conclude approximately late 2013.
